Former MLB pitcher Danny Serafini arrested in connection with alleged murder of in-laws

A former Major League Baseball pitcher was reportedly arrested on Friday with links to the alleged murder and attempted murder of his in-laws that took place in Lake Tahoe in 2021.

Danny Serafini, 49, and Samantha Scott, 33, were taken into custody Friday morning in connection with the murder of Robert Gary Spohr and the attempted murder of Wendy Wood, according to a statement released on Facebook by the Placer County Sheriff’s Office.

The victims involved in the case were apparently Serafini’s father- and mother-in-law. While Sgt. David Smith refused to explain the relationship between Serafini and Scott, he confirmed that the “suspects were known to each other,” per NBC News.

Serafini was ultimately arrested in Winnemucca, Nevada, and Scott was apparently arrested at the Harry Reid International Airport, according to Smith.

The authorities were reportedly called to a home in Homewood on June 5, 2021, a neighborhood located in North Lake Tahoe. When they arrived on the scene, Spohr was discovered to be dead from a gunshot wound. While Wood was also shot in the incident, she survived and was subsequently treated at the local hospital. However, she passed away a year later.

Investigators in the case managed to secure surveillance footage of the residence, which is how they identified a hooded man wearing a face covering entering the residence several hours before the alleged slaying occurred, per the report.

After gathering other important evidence, the authorities reportedly had legitimate reason to believe that Serafini and Scott are suspects in the case.

“Today, justice was served,” Smith said in a statement. “The apprehension of those responsible for the tragic events that unfolded in Homewood, North Lake Tahoe in 2021 stands as a testament to the unwavering dedication of our detectives, law enforcement partners, and the persistence of our pursuit of truth.”

The Daily Mail reported that Serafini has secured attorney David Fischer, but it is currently unclear if Scott has secured an attorney.
