I have been watching the YouTube postings on hurricane Melissa that hit Jamaica. I always say and try to believe that God is able to make good come out of anything. The devastation is such that it requires great faith to stand strong under the circumstances. People have lost their livelihood. Many people did not have much by first world standard, but they had figured out a way to make a living. Many of the houses in the rural areas were made of wood with zinc roofs. They were no match for the over 195 mph winds of the hurricane.

Even though the hurricane has come and gone, the people of Jamaica face a long recovery period. It seems the ones with the least suffered the most. There is a need for clean drinking water, food, shelter, clothes. We tend to take our basic needs when they are met, for granted. We are looking for a bigger house, a newer car, fancy clothes, fine dining. We must never forget to be thankful for having our basic needs met. God is the supplier of all good things; we must never forget to thank Him for making a way for those basic needs to be met.

It is astonishing that there are people who would use this opportunity to steal money given to help the people of Jamaica by posting false web sites. So, while it is good to give to help them, we must exercise wisdom in our giving. Give to reputable agencies. Give as the Lord leads. Pray for the people of Jamaica. Many of them have a very difficult road ahead. Pray also that those who do not know the Lord will turn to Him. We know that it often takes a crisis for us to seek Him. Pray that we will see good come out of this crisis, that we will see the hand of God move to comfort the people of Jamaica and to bless them in the midst of their trials.
