New York Times’s Editorial Board Member Op-Ed: ‘NATO Must Be Less Dependent on America.’

The New York Times‘s Editorial Board member, Farah Stockman, has published an op-ed in the Grey Lady calling for European nations to do more for their own security and end the military dependence on the United States. The lines are straight out of a long-standing Donald Trump complaint list about how the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) functions, and even repeats critical parts of Trump’s messaging.

“It is now becoming increasingly clear that Europeans need to shoulder more responsibility for their own defense,” Stockman writes, alleging that NATO’s first Supreme Allied Commander Europe, President Dwight Eisenhower, would regard the project as failed, today.

“The United States simply can’t do everything everywhere all at once, by itself. The future requires well-armed, capable allies. The indispensable nation has to be a bit less indispensable,” Stockman continued.

Sounding even more Trumpian, Stockman says: “So why does this dependence persist? Part of the reason is human nature. Why would allies invest in defense if Uncle Sam always picks up the tab?”
