A stone of help

In North Carolina, there is a program called the Historical Marker Program. Across the state, silver and black signs are placed near the major roads to identify significant historical locations. These signs mark locations of significant battles in the state, the locations of major events in the state’s history, interesting locations in the state, and people that accomplished certain feats.

I always love these markers as I drive across our state. I see them and I do my best to read each one to see what the significance of the marker is. There are many of these markers I did not know about before passing them. But for the ones that I was aware of, they serve as a memorial for what took place.

In this verse, Samuel took a stone and set it, calling it Ebenezer. The name Ebenezer means a stone of help. God had done something for the people at that location, and he wanted them to remember it. It was a historical marker and as they passed by, I can imagine in my mind how they shared what God had done for them.

In each of our lives, God has done significant things. He has helped us in ways beyond what we could imagine and we remember those things in our lives. But have we passed those markers and told someone else about them?

Whatever the circumstance was that God helped you with, there is someone somewhere that needs to hear about it. Maybe they are going through something similar. Maybe they will face it in the future. It may help them understand more about God and strengthen their faith in Him.

As you pass the historical markers in your life, don’t forget what God has done for you. Share those stories with your friends, family, and your children. Let them know that God was faithful and how He helped you.
