There is a difference between joy and happiness. Joy is not based on what is happening at any given time but is a feeling that can reside in us despite outward circumstances. We are told in the Bible that one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit is joy. In other words, when we have the Holy Spirit, He brings joy into our hearts (Galatians 5:22-23). I have experienced this joy. It bubbles up from within for no particular reason in the natural.

I would not want to live in these perilous times without the Holy Spirit. Jesus promised to send Him so He could lead us into truth and be a comforter and teacher (John 15:26). I can recall when my main source of information was the newspapers (yes, I am that old 😊). Now, there is so much information on the internet and on tv that it takes discernment to decipher truth from lies. It is possible to live in an “echo chamber”, where you can hear only from those who espouse whatever you want to believe. The Bible describes this as having itching ears (2 Timothy 4:3-4). It is the truth, however, that sets us free.

Have you ever met anyone who is always focused on the negative? They can be living an extremely blessed life, but they will not appreciate it because they always focus on whatever negative they can find. Life here will never be perfect. We will always have trials. The Bible says in Psalm 34:19 “Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of them all” (KJV). If we keep the right perspective, when trials come, we will turn to God in prayer and trust Him to not only deliver us but also to make good come out of the circumstances. I have seen Him do this many times in my life.

If we develop an attitude of praise in all circumstances, we will find our faith steadfast, our happiness increased, and the joy of the Lord will be our strength.
