French President Emmanuel Macron has dissolved the national parliament following his party’s thrashing by Marine Le Pen’s National Rally in the European Elections on Sunday. The nation will now face domestic elections, with opinion polling showing the right-wing party in the lead. The next presidential elections are scheduled for 2027.
Projections on Sunday afternoon indicated that Le Pen’s National Rally secured around 32 percent of the vote, far outpacing President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist Renaissance party, which garnered around 15 percent.
The situation represents a massive setback for Macron, who had emphasized the importance of the European Elections for the future of the European Union.
The National Rally’s Jordan Bardella described the vote as “a verdict against which there is no appeal.” He criticized Macron as a “weakened” leader.
