Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis on Monday urged a Georgia court to reject former President Donald Trump’s request that it reconsider a decision by a lower court judge allowing her to remain on the case against him.
Willis has faced allegations of benefitting from an improper relationship with Nathan Wade, a special prosecutor whom she hired to pursue her prosecution of Trump. Both have admitted to the relationship but claim it began after Willis hired Wade. Judge Scott McAfee last month ruled Willis could remain if Wade stepped down, which he ultimately did. Trump has appealed the decision allowing Willis to remain.
“Days of evidence and testimony failed to disclose anything like a calculated pre-trial plan designed to prejudice the defendants or secure their convictions,” she wrote in the filing, according to The Hill. “The applicants have not identified any public statement injecting the District Attorney’s personal belief as to the defendants’ guilt or appealing to the public weighing of evidence.”
Trump formally appealed McAfee’s decision in late March after the judge granted a certificate of review permitting such a step.
