One of the ten commandments is Exodus 20:8 – “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy”. The bible also says six days of labor should be followed by a day of rest.

Most of the original ten commandments are covered by the commandments Jesus gave Matthew 22:37-39 (NCV) Jesus answered, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. This is the first and most important command. And the second command is like the first: ‘Love your neighbor as you love yourself.” When we love others as we love ourselves, we will find that we will not have hatred towards them and will treat them in the way they should be treated.

When Jesus walked the earth, we read that He was often confronted by the religious leaders of the day, saying that he was not treating the Sabbath as the commandment said. Jesus went about doing good on the Sabbath day. In reading the scriptures I realized that Jesus did the work of the seventh day. Jesus said that His Father worked before and now He worked (John 5:17-18). He also said that He was Lord of the Sabbath (Matthew 12:8). Hebrews 4:10 – For whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from their works, Just as God did from His.”

The Old Testament covenant was a covenant based on works. The New Testament covenant is a covenant based on grace. The original work of the first six days of creation was to create the heavens and the earth. The seventh day was set aside as a day to redeem the earth back to God. This is the work that Jesus came to do. God in his foreknowledge knew that Adam and Eve would sin, and He would have to redeem the earth back to Himself.

When we confess our sins and accept Jesus as Lord and Savior we enter into His rest. The rest of the seventh day.
